Okay, "Foxy Brown" is a REVENGE FANTASY and I'm Kinda Here For It?!
Alright rom-com lovers, lemme throw something WILD at ya: "Foxy Brown." Yes, *that* Pam Grier joint from the 70s. I know, I know, totally different vibe from, say, "When Harry Met Sally," but hear me out. This movie is bonkers, but underneath all the exploitation-era grit and questionable outfits (seriously, those platform boots!), there's this core of female empowerment that I found surprisingly... satisfying? Her boyfriend gets offed by the mob (obvs) and she goes undercover as a high-class call girl to get her revenge. Like, talk about commitment! Look, let's be real, the plot is ridiculous. Some of the acting is... well, 70s acting. And the violence? Whew. But Pam Grier just *owns* that role. She's fierce, she's clever, and she’s clearly in charge. Remember the scene where she confronts Katherine Wall? Pure gold. And when she saves her brother from the drug dealers? Total badass moment. I mean, okay, the methods she uses are, um, extreme. But you gotta admire the dedication! I think what grabbed me was seeing a woman in a genre that often felt very male-dominated *take. control.* It's definitely not a rom-com, and probably not for everyone. There are definitely parts that are difficult to watch through a 2024 lens. But beneath all that is a powerful woman who just wants to protect those she loves, something that connects to the core of a rom-com in a way. I definitely wouldn't watch this with my grandma, lol. But if you're looking for something completely OTT and kinda subversive, give it a shot. Just, y'know, maybe have something light and fluffy ready to watch afterwards. "Sleepless in Seattle", maybe? Just to cleanse the palette. LOL. Anyone else seen this? What did *you* think? I'm dying to hear your opinions. Did I miss something? Or did I over-analyze a blaxploitation film? Be honest!
