Ok, "Vampyres" (1974) - Kinda Sleazy, Kinda Awesome
Alright, so I finally got around to checking out this flick, "Vampyres" from '74. I'd heard it was, uh... something. And yeah, it definitely delivers on a certain level. Forget your sparkly vampires, these chicks are BRUTAL. The blood is gloriously fake, bright red, and EVERYWHERE. I'm a practical effects guy, ya know? So the gore is fun. The story itself is simple: hot lesbian vamps lure unsuspecting dudes (and one lady, I think?) to their creepy mansion for a bite. No big surprises there. What really stuck with me, though, was the driving scenes. Seriously, props to whoever was behind the wheel. There's this one scene where one of the vamps is chasing a dude in his car down these winding country roads, and the camera's right there on the hood. You can FEEL the speed, the danger. I'm always looking for good, real car stunts and this was it. I'm not sure if it was a proper stunt driver or just a madman behind the wheel, but it was effective. Definitely more entertaining than some CGI garbage we see these days. Is it a *good* movie? Hard to say. It's cheesy, exploitative, and definitely not for everyone. Some of the acting is... questionable, to be kind. But there's a certain raw energy to it, a grittiness that I appreciate. It feels real, even when it's completely ridiculous. Plus, those early practical effects were pretty good even if they're dated now. I'd say if you're into cult horror, or just want to see some over-the-top vampire action, give it a shot. Just don't expect Shakespeare, lol. One thing i'm trying to get definitive answer - who directed it? It's always listed as unknown. Anybody have the answer? Gotta be someone who knows!
