Deranged (1974): Ok, that was messed up, but was it *good* messed up?

Okay, so I just watched "Deranged" (1974) and...wow. Just wow. I knew going in it was loosely based on Ed Gein, but I still wasn't totally prepared for how...raw...it was. Like, the effects are super low budget, obviously, but that kinda adds to the creep factor, right? I kept thinking like, 'This is what someone thought was scary back then?!' It's definitely got a different vibe than modern horror. Ezra Cobb, man, what a character. Or lack thereof, maybe? It's sad and disturbing how his mom totally warped his mind. But honestly, the way he just starts collecting body parts after she croaks, it's just...bizarre. The whole 'redecorating' the house with human remains thing is just next-level crazy. And the scene where he's dressed up in his mom's clothes? I legit had to pause it, lol. But here's my question: did it *work* for anyone else? Like, scare you, disturb you, whatever? Or did the low budget and kinda goofy acting (especially from the 'nosy neighbor' ladies, haha) take away from it? I kinda felt like it was so over-the-top that it almost became funny at times, but then the underlying darkness would creep back in. I'm conflicted! Lemme know your thoughts, horror fanatics! Also, am I the only one who think it was kinda weird how casually Sheriff kinda was with Ezra? Like they seem almost friendly at times, the whole dynamic is super weird. Is there a subtext I am missing?
