Is "Once Upon a Time..." actually about Cliff Booth?
Okay, HughesReviews fam, gotta talk about something that's been bugging me about "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" since I first saw it. We all get caught up in Rick Dalton's arc, right? The fading star trying to stay relevant. But the real engine of the film... is it actually Cliff Booth? Hear me out. Think about it. Narratively, he's almost too good. He's the loyal friend, the capable stuntman, and even when he's a bit morally ambiguous (the whole wife thing is... yikes), you're still kinda rooting for him. And Tarantino spends so much time with him. We get extended sequences of him just driving, fixing antennas, hanging out with Brandy. It's almost like we're experiencing his Los Angeles, not Rick's. Rick's story is about anxiety and decline, Cliff's is about... well, just existing, but with an underlying current of quiet competence. Maybe Tarantino is suggesting that genuine contentment and capability are more heroic than the fleeting fame Rick craves. And then there's the ending. It's Cliff, not Rick, who ultimately saves Sharon Tate and her friends from the Manson Family. It's Cliff who gets the (admittedly insane) action scene, and it's Cliff who gets carried out on a stretcher a hero, while Rick gets – what? – an invitation inside. It's like the whole movie builds Cliff up to be this almost mythical figure of the Old Hollywood, a guy who lives by his own code and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. The film's title is 'Once Upon a Time..,' what if it means this is all a fairytale of Cliff Booth? A way of romanticizing the stuntman of the old era? I'm not totally sold on this theory, but I keep coming back to it - what do you all think? One last thing - I'm also dying to find out more about the score cues we DON'T hear in the film. Tarantino always has the best music, but it's the 'needle drops', not score like I usually cover. I wonder if there was an initial idea with an unused score? Anyway, let me know your thoughts!
