Is "The Father" Too Much for a Family Movie Night?
Okay, so I just finished watching "The Father" (2020) – wow, what a TRIP. Anthony Hopkins is, well, Anthony Hopkins! He's incredible. The whole plot is about this older man who's struggling with what seems like dementia, and it's told from his perspective. Which makes it super disorienting and often heartbreaking. My question is, would you guys consider this movie appropriate to watch with older teens? My initial thought is… probably not? Even though there's no explicit violence or anything, the emotional weight of it is HEAVY. There's this scene where his daughter, Anne, is trying to help him, and he's just so confused and angry… it felt very real and raw, but kinda difficult to watch. My kids, while teens, are still kids you know? I worry it'd be too upsetting for them, especially since my own grandmother struggled with similar issues. Maybe if we had a really good discussion afterward it could be beneficial? Has anyone watched this with their teens? What were their reactions? I'm on the fence, but honestly, the performances are so good that I almost want to share it. Maybe I should pre-screen it for them, although that kinda defeats the purpose of watching it together, doesn't it? Ugh, parenting is hard! Also, completely unrelated but did anyone understand the significance of the watch? Or was it just meant to emphasize his loss of control over time and memory? I'm probably overthinking it, lol.
