Mank: The Clothes Tell a Story (Maybe More Than the Dialogue!)

Okay, just finished "Mank" and wow, that was... a lot. The story itself was interesting, I guess, but honestly, my eyes were GLUED to the costumes. Like, Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies? Perfection. That feathered gown she wears when Mank first arrives at Hearst Castle? Iconic. I'm pretty sure that level of glamour could single-handedly revive the entire 1930s aesthetic. Seriously, someone get me a budget for oversized bows and bias-cut satin, stat! But beyond the obvious glamour, I loved how the costumes subtly reflected the characters' positions and personalities. Mank himself is often rumpled and disheveled (naturally, given his… vices). Then you have someone like Louis B Mayer, always impeccably tailored, radiating power. It’s a really smart way to give you extra information without even saying anything. Even the differences between the East Coast and West Coast styles were super noticeable. I will say, I got a little lost in some of the plot points and the black and white graininess wasn’t always my fave (I get it's stylistic!), but visually, the film was stunning. I need to rewatch it just for the clothes, honestly. Anyone else totally obsessed with the styling? Or am I alone in thinking the costumes were low-key the most compelling part?
