Dune (2021) - Paul's Visions & The Danger of Prophecy
Okay, so I finally saw Dune (2021) and WOW. Visually stunning, no argument there. But what really got me thinking was Paul's visions. We see him struggling with them THROUGHOUT the whole movie. It isn't just 'powers' for him, it's a burden. My theory is this: the Bene Gesserit and their whole breeding program aren't just about creating the Kwisatz Haderach. They're creating someone who can be controlled through prophecy and visions. Think about it – they're constantly testing him, judging his reactions to fear, pain, everything. And they've spoon-fed the Fremen legends about the Lisan al Gaib specifically so that when Paul starts having these visions, the Fremen are primed to accept him. So it isn't just about the power, it is about how one could manipulate such a person and how they could be used. It's almost like the visions are a way to pre-program him. Like, yeah, he can see the future, but that future is ultimately shaped by the expectations and beliefs that have been deliberately planted within him and the Fremen. And tbh I think he is almost aware of that too. This makes Paul's journey WAY more interesting than just a typical 'chosen one' narrative. He has to contend with it - figure it out, and it will influence his trajectory either way. I'm really hoping the second movie dives deeper into this. I hope he can forge his own path, or maybe he will become the puppet they are trying to create... what do you think? Am I totally off base here?
