Spielberg's West Side Story: Did it Beat the Original?

Okay, so I finally got around to watching Spielberg's West Side Story. I know, I know, I'm late to the party! But as a hardcore book-to-screen kinda gal, I had to see what they did with it. And honestly? I went in skeptical. The original is such a classic. But Spielberg... he kinda nailed it? First off, the visuals are stunning. The opening sequence, with the Jets claiming their territory, was just breathtaking. And the way they used color throughout the movie? Chef's kiss. I especially loved Ariana DeBose as Anita. She brought a real fire to the role. Rita Moreno's cameo was perfection, obviously. But I think what I appreciated most was how they delved deeper into the cultural context. You really felt the desperation of both the Jets and the Sharks. It wasn't just a simple 'gangs fighting' story; it was about displacement and prejudice. Okay, a few gripes, though. Ansel Elgort as Tony... I don't know. He was fine, but didn't quite have the same charisma as Richard Beymer in the original. And maybe it's just me, but some of the dialogue felt a little clunky at times? Like they were trying too hard to be 'authentic' or something. But overall, yeah, I really enjoyed it. Did it beat the original? That's a tough one. They're different beasts. The original has that nostalgia factor, that classic Hollywood charm. But Spielberg’s version is a powerful and visually stunning reimagining that stays true to the heart of the story. I think it’s worth watching even if you already know the story, its a beautifully made film! What did everyone else think? Let me know!
