The Black Phone: Is the Phone...Possessed?
Okay, so I just got out of The Black Phone and while the movie itself was pretty solid (Ethan Hawke NAILED that role, seriously creepy), I'm kinda fixated on the phone itself. We know it's disconnected, right? And Finney's getting calls from the Grabber's past victims. So, here's my theory: is the phone possessed, or like, acting as a conduit for these spirits? I'm thinking about the visual cues. The phone is filthy, ancient almost, and in this super sterile, soundproofed basement, it just feels...wrong. Like an object with a history. And the way the voices distort when Finney answers? It's not just a sound effect, it felt intentional. Like the phone itself was amplifying their voices, filtering them through some kind of spiritual static. Remember that scene when he's getting advice on how to dig under the floor? The urgency in that kid's voice felt like it was coming through the phone, not just from it. Maybe the Grabber unwittingly created this link? Maybe his violence somehow charged the phone, turning it into a supernatural receiver. Or heck, maybe the house is built on some old burial ground cliche! I dunno, I'm spitballing here, but the directors really emphasized the physicality of the phone itself, the way it looked and sounded. It couldn't just be a plot device, right? It felt more integral than that. Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there. Anyone else have thoughts on the phone's role in everything? Did you guys feel like it was just a symbolic tool, or something more... active?
