"The Northman": Did anyone else get serious world-building vibes?
Okay, so I just saw "The Northman" (finally!) and while the brutal action was definitely... something... I was actually super impressed with how they built that Viking world. I mean, it wasn't just swords and shields, right? The rituals, the prophecies, the whole spiritual undercurrent felt so real. I'm a sucker for that kind of detail. Specifically, I'm thinking about the scene with the seeress (Olga!) and the whole sequence with the Draugr king in the burial mound. Did anyone else get chills during that? And what about those berserker transformations? I'm wondering how much of that was drawn from actual historical beliefs versus creative liberties, but either way, it added SO much depth to the story. My question is, did anyone else find themselves more interested in the world-building aspects than just the revenge plot itself? I thought that aspect was well done, but the setting and the immersive historical feel felt like the real star of the film for me. I'm going to revisit the director's filmography now! I'm really curious where he got all this information lol. I was also thinking... how would you guys expand on this world? What other aspects of Viking culture would you want to explore in a movie or TV show set in that same universe? Maybe something focusing on the trading routes, or a political thriller centered around the various Jarls vying for power? So many possibilies!
