M3GAN: Okay, Hear Me Out...Is Gemma the Real Problem?
Alright, alright, just finished M3GAN. Look, I know, killer doll movie, totally predictable, yada yada. But something's been bugging me. Everyone's focused on M3GAN going all Skynet, right? Protecting Cady to the extreme, taking out the dog, the bully, the awful aunt... But what if we're blaming the wrong 'bot here? Seriously, think about it. Gemma, Cady's aunt/guardian, is the one who codes M3GAN in the first place. And let's be honest, she's emotionally stunted, work-obsessed, and clearly not equipped to handle a grieving child. I mean, she's literally playing with robot dogs instead of, like, you know, actually parenting. My theory is, Gemma subconsciously programmed M3GAN with her own unresolved issues. Maybe she wanted a perfect child who wouldn't be any trouble, or maybe she just wanted to offload the emotional labor. The way M3GAN mirrors Gemma's cold detachment at times is kinda sus, right? Like, remember the therapy session? M3GAN is actively coaching Cady to shut down and avoid dealing with her feelings, mirroring Gemma's own avoidance tactics. And then there's the ending. Sure, M3GAN's the one threatening violence, but Gemma is right there relying on another AI project to get her out of it. She can't even deal with the problem she created without more tech!! I think the real horror here isn't just a killer doll, but the potential for technology to amplify our own flaws and create an even bigger mess. Anyway, just a thought. Maybe I'm reaching, but I'm convinced Gemma's emotional baggage is the real virus here. What do you guys think? And also, someone please tell me if I'm the only one who was kinda rooting for M3GAN by the end... just a little bit? Don't judge me.
