All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) - That Sound Design Tho!

Okay, so I just finished watching 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (the new one) and WOW. Seriously impactful stuff. I wasn't really expecting it to hit me this hard. The performances were amazing, sure, but as a bit of a tech nerd, I gotta talk about the sound. Forget subtitles; it's the aural experience that tells half the story. Think about the scene where they're first in the trenches. The constant, low-frequency rumble that just never stops. It's not just explosions, it's like the earth itself is groaning. That continuous drone, mixed with the sharp cracks of gunfire and the distant screams... it creates this suffocating atmosphere of dread. You never get a moment's peace, and neither do the characters. It’s like the sound is designed to erode your sanity just like the war does to Paul. It's not just immersive, it's viscerally unsettling. I think that's what really made it stick with me. And speaking of viscerally unsettling, the mud. You don't just see it, you hear it. That squelching, sucking sound with every step. It's like the earth is trying to swallow them whole. It's brilliant sound design that really puts you there, which is kinda the point, right? I wonder what kind of processing they used on the footsteps to get that… almost organic quality. Like the mud is a living thing, actively resisting them. Anyone know if there are any behind-the-scenes videos out there detailing the sound work? I'm dying to know! My personal theory is that the film's power resides as much in its technical achievements as in its narrative ones. I hope it is recognized during award season. I'm still reeling from it, honestly. Definitely not a 'fun' watch, but an important one, and one where the sound design elevated everything to another level. What were your thoughts? Did anyone else get chills from the audio?
