Brendan Fraser in The Whale - Gut Punch or Too Much?

Okay, so I finally saw The Whale. Whew. Brendan Fraser... dude gave it EVERYTHING, right? I mean, the prosthetics were a LOT, and honestly, at first, they were kinda distracting. But as the movie went on, I definitely connected with Charlie's pain. You could see it in his eyes even beneath all the makeup. I think that's a real testament to Fraser's commitment to the role, especially after everything he's been through personally. But here's my question, and I'm really curious what others think. There were moments, especially with Liz (Hong Chau, amazing as always!), where the movie felt almost exploitative? Like, we were supposed to feel disgusted, or at least uncomfortable, by Charlie's size and eating habits. And while I understand that's part of his self-destructive behavior, I wonder if the film crossed a line. Was it necessary to show so much? Did it actually add anything to understanding Charlie's internal struggle, or was it just shock value? And let's talk about Ellie (Sadie Sink). Her anger felt so raw and believable. I really bought her resentment and confusion towards Charlie. I get that he messed up big time leaving her and her mom, but it also gave her such a unique perspective in the film. Was she too cruel? I get that she's hurting, but the things she said... Ouch. I need to see this movie again to fully solidify my feelings on it. So, what are your takes? Was The Whale a powerful portrayal of grief and redemption, or did it fall into the trap of sensationalizing obesity? I'm genuinely torn, and I'd love to hear some different perspectives. (Also, typo in the name of the director - sorry, I forgot!)
