Barbarian - Okay, WHAT did I just watch?! (Spoilers, obvs)
Alright, so I just finished watching Barbarian and like... I'm still processing. I went in mostly blind (as I try to do), just knowing it was horror. And it definitely delivered on the horror, but in a way I completely didn't expect. The tonal shifts were wild! Like, one minute you're dealing with awkward Airbnb roommate stuff with Keith and the next you're... well, you KNOW. Georgina Campbell was fantastic as Tess. She really sold the increasing dread and her own instincts fighting against what she wanted to believe. And Bill Skarsgård, even though he was playing against type (at least initially), still gave off this unsettling vibe. Honestly, the whole first act with just the two of them in the house was brilliant tension building. Then Justin Long shows up... and things get reeeeally weird. I actually felt bad for AJ Gilbride at times, even though he's clearly a terrible person. But also, LOL, imagine finding that basement? Yikes city! But here's my burning question: what were we supposed to feel about the ending? Specifically regarding Tess's choices? I mean, yeah, she shoots Frank, but then she's kind of forced to protect AJ (even though he's basically a monster) and in the end she chooses to save the random guy over him. Was the movie trying to say anything about survival instincts? About trauma? Or was it just straight up, "kill the bad guys, save yourself"? I'm genuinely curious what other people took away from that last scene. Also, side note: that tunnel system was terrifying and felt so real! The set design completely sold me on the history of that neighborhood. Would love to hear anyones thoughts!
