Purple Hearts...Fake Marriage, Real Tears? My Take (and a question!)

Alright action junkies, I know, I know, Purple Hearts (2022) isn't exactly blowing up buildings or filled with fight choreography. BUT, I watched it last night because my wife was all about it, and I gotta admit, despite being a total sap-fest, it got me thinking. It's about this musician and Marine... they get married for the benefits, and then stuff gets real dramatic. No spoilers, but you probably get the gist. Now, I'm all about practical effects and insane stunt work, right? So, obviously, a romantic drama about war isn't usually my cup of tea. What struck me though was the emotional authenticity. Even though the setup is kinda cheesy (fake marriage?? Come on!), some scenes felt really grounded, especially the scenes depicting war injuries. I gotta wonder HOW realistic were they? Specifically, that explosion scene featuring Luke. I'm assuming they had to use some decent SFX to make it believable (not practical effects, but still). Do you guys think they actually consulted with any former combat medics or soldiers about the types of injuries shown? It's crucial for the story, and affects the realism. So, what did you guys think? Did Purple Hearts manage to bridge the gap between cheesy romance and somewhat realistic war drama? I'm curious if anyone else who's more of a practical effects/action fanatic like me actually found parts of it compelling. Or am I just gettin' soft in my old age? Let me know!
