Purple Hearts: Okay I'm Conflicted...
Okay, so I finally got around to watching Purple Hearts on Netflix. I know, I know, I'm late to the party. As you guys know, I'm way more about following directors and their whole filmography than chasing trends, but the premise intrigued me a little, and I was looking for something easy to watch, y'know? Look, Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine are both ridiculously good-looking, and I gotta give them credit, they committed to their roles. I thought Carson did a really great job portraying the struggles of a young woman with diabetes trying to make it in the music industry. The songs were... fine. Nothing super groundbreaking, but they fit the movie. My biggest issue is the writing. It felt... forced? Like, they were trying too hard to represent two opposing viewpoints and ended up with caricatures instead of rounded characters. The initial antagonism felt so contrived. The whole transition from fake marriage to love felt rushed, especially after the medical emergency thing--that part felt a bit manipulative. I also saw some people complaining about the politics, and I kinda get it. Some of the Marine's initial views felt a little on the nose, but I think the point was to show him evolving? Still, it could've been handled with more nuance. But then again, is nuance really what you're expecting from a Netflix romance? Probably not! Overall, it's a decent watch if you're in the mood for a cheesy, melodramatic romance. I definitely wouldn't call it a good movie, but it wasn't terrible. I'm curious what other people thought of it! Did anyone else get annoyed by the stereotypes, or was it just me? And what did you think of the music? Be nice! haha
