"The Pale Blue Eye" - Creepy, But Did It Stick the Landing?
Okay horror fiends, I finally got around to watching "The Pale Blue Eye" and I have some thoughts. Overall, I was really digging the atmosphere. That cold, bleak West Point setting in 1830? Chef's kiss. Very moody and sets the stage perfectly for something sinister to be brewing. Christian Bale as Landor? Solid choice, always a pro. And Harry Melling as Edgar Allan Poe? I was skeptical at first, but he freaking nailed the weirdness and intensity of the character. Some amazing casting all around. I was totally hooked by the mystery of the heart removal. Super gruesome and unsettling. And the whole occult angle they started hinting at? I was SO ready for it. BUT... I don't know, the ending felt a little… rushed? Like they built up this incredible suspense and then kinda just threw the answer at us. It wasn't bad, necessarily, just... not as impactful as I was hoping for. I guess I was expecting more of a supernatural reveal. Maybe that's just me, though. I definitely appreciate that they went for something a bit more grounded, even if it wasn't what I personally wanted. Did anyone else feel that way about the ending? Or am I just being too picky? Ignoring the ending, it's definitely a beautifully shot and well-acted movie. That scene where Landor and Poe are digging through the cemetery in the middle of the night? Pure atmospheric brilliance. I seriously wouldn't mind watching it again just for the visuals alone. All in all, I'd say if you're into slow-burn thrillers with a gothic vibe, then you should definitely give "The Pale Blue Eye" a watch. Just maybe temper your expectations for a mind-blowing twist. Let me know what you think!
