Troll (2022): Giant Monster Mayhem... with a Side of Norse Mythology?
Okay, so I just finished watching "Troll" on [Streaming Service Name Here - I'm not going to endorse any specific one, haha] and honestly? I was pleasantly surprised. I went in expecting some cheesy B-movie creature feature, but it actually had some decent world-building going on, even if it was a bit rushed. The basic premise is, explosion in Norway wakes up a giant troll that's been sleeping for like, a thousand years. Classic. What I did like was the way they tied it into Norse mythology. Like, not just dropping a "Thor" reference, but actually building the creature's background and motivations around ancient folklore. The paleontologist character, Nora, was a good lead, and her father's whole backstory with the troll mythology? That was genuinely compelling, even if it got a little exposition-heavy at times. Visually, the troll itself was pretty well done. It looked suitably ancient and imposing, and the scale of the thing was genuinely terrifying. I especially liked the scene where it emerged from the forest near Oslo - the sense of scale and the sheer destruction was impressive. My one nitpick is I kinda wished they explored the motivations of the troll a little more. It felt like it was just angry because it woke up, which is kinda lame. A little more depth there would have really elevated it from a standard monster movie. Where it kinda fell apart for me was the military's response. It felt so generic and cliché. Missiles and tanks just aren't gonna do the trick, people! I get needing to create tension, but the tactics were... not great. I was shouting at the TV, like, "Use the sonic frequencies mentioned earlier! Ugh!" Also, the ending felt a little... abrupt? Like they ran out of budget or something. But overall, it's a fun, popcorn flick, especially if you're into giant monster movies and Norse mythology. Don't expect a Bergman masterpiece, but it's definitely worth a watch if you're bored and want some good old creature feature chaos. I give it a solid 7/10. Would recommend for a Friday night movie night with friends... just don't think too hard about the science. ;)
