Amsterdam: More Conspiracy Than Cohesion?
Okay, so I finally saw "Amsterdam" and... I'm still processing. The cast was incredible, right? Bale, Robbie, Washington... you name it, they were there. But the plot? Hoo boy, that thing was a tangled web. I keep thinking back to that whole Business Plot element they hinted at. Real thing! Look it up if you haven't already. But in the movie, did it really pay off? I'm not so sure. My theory is that they tried to cram too much 'history' into one film. You've got the war, post-war trauma, racism, fascism rising... it's a lot. Maybe if they'd focused more tightly on the core trio and their relationship, it would've worked better. The Amsterdam flashbacks were beautiful and I actually liked seeing that bohemian artist life portrayed, but then it felt like the 'plot' just kept interrupting the character development. And honestly, after a while, I started wondering if the whole murder mystery was just a red herring to get us to the real 'message' about standing up for what's right against these shadowy figures. That's a great message, no argument there. But the delivery felt kinda... disjointed? Like each individual scene had great actors doing great work, it just wasn't gelling into a cohesive whole. I saw some people saying it was boring, and I don't know if I'd go that far. But it felt like it was trying to be so many different things at once that it ended up not really landing any of them that well. I wanted to LOVE this, especially with that cast, but it just kinda left me scratching my head. Anyone else feel the same way? Or am I totally missing something?
