Okay, 'Three Thousand Years of Longing' Was...A Lot
So, I just finished watching 'Three Thousand Years of Longing'. I went in totally blind, didn't even know who directed it (some director I'd never heard of, I think) and honestly, I'm still processing. That movie was weeeeird. In a good way, mostly. I mean, Tilda Swinton is always amazing, right? She plays this narratology professor who's, like, super content with her life of books and lectures. Then BAM! Genie in a bottle. Or, Djinn, I guess. Idris Elba as a gigantic, ear-pointed, ancient Djinn? Yeah, I was on board. The visuals were insane. Like, mind-bendingly beautiful. The flashbacks to the Djinn's past were probably my favorite part. The Queen of Sheba scene? Absolutely stunning. But then it got...complex. Three wishes, existential crisis, discussions about storytelling, and a whole lot of 'what is love?' It was a heady mix. I think the movie kind of lost me a few times in the middle. It felt a little too...academic? I don't know if that makes sense. But the ending, with them trying to navigate a modern, cynical world together, was actually really poignant. Like, this immortal being trying to understand wifi and cellphones? Kind of hilarious and oddly touching at the same time. Overall, I think I liked it? It's definitely not a rewatch-immediately kind of movie, but I'm glad I saw it. Anyone else see it? What did you guys think? Did you get the whole 'deeper meaning' thing or was it just me?
