TÁR: Is Lydia Really THAT Bad? (or is it complicated?)
Okay, so I finally saw TÁR. And I'm... conflicted, man. Like, Cate Blanchett kills it (obviously), but I'm still trying to figure out how I actually feel about Lydia as a person. It's like, she's clearly a complicated character, a genius, but also... not great. Remember that scene in the Juilliard masterclass? "Don't be so eager to be offended." I get what she's trying to say about Bach, but the way she comes down on that student felt so unnecessary. Cold, even. Total power move. And then there's Francesca. The whole dynamic there is just... icky. You can feel the power imbalance seeping off the screen. But at the same time, is Lydia solely to blame? Is she really a monster, or just operating in a system that rewards cutthroat behavior? I keep thinking about that line from The Usual Suspects: "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." Is she the devil in disguise, or just another cog in a machine that's already broken? What really got me thinking was the final scene. The very end... I won't spoil it, but it's... unexpected, to say the least. It really makes you re-evaluate everything you've just watched. I'm still processing it. I think it's brilliant but also makes me wonder if the film is trying to say something about "cancel culture" or just the simple fact that actions have consequences. So, what did everyone else think? Did you find yourself sympathizing with Lydia at all? Or were you firmly in the 'she got what she deserved' camp? I'm genuinely curious to hear other peoples' perspectives, because honestly, right now, I'm just shouting into the void – feels kinda like that Wilhelm scream, y'know? LOL.
