D&D: Honor Among Thieves - Surprisingly Funny AND Good?
Okay, so I went in with super low expectations. I'm a pretty big D&D nerd (dice goblin, represent!) and movie adaptations of games, especially ones I love, usually make me wanna rage quit life. But... I actually kinda loved "Honor Among Thieves"? Like, genuinely enjoyed it. The humor was on point – not slapstick-y or forced, but more like the kind of ridiculous stuff that happens naturally when you're playing with your friends and everything goes sideways. The scene with questioning the dead ancestors? Pure gold. I choked on my popcorn laughing. Chris Pine as Edgin was perfect casting, imo. He managed to pull off the charming-but-useless leader thing without being annoying. Michelle Rodriguez as Holga was fantastic too – she felt like a real barbarian, all stoic and butt-kicking. I wasn't totally sold on Simon at first (the sorcerer), but he grew on me. And honestly, the world-building was surprisingly decent! They captured the Forgotten Realms aesthetic really well, and I appreciated the little nods to the lore. The Owlbear transformation was especially cool, visually. Were there flaws? Sure. The main villain felt a little…underdeveloped? And the plot got a bit convoluted towards the end. Plus, I'm always gonna be picky about deviations from the source material. But overall, it was a fun, lighthearted adventure that didn't take itself too seriously, which is exactly what a D&D movie should be. It certainly blew the Marlon Wayans D&D movie from 2000 out of the water, lol. Anyone else see it? What did you think? Did it capture the feeling of a good D&D campaign for you, or did it fall short? Let's discuss!
