Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS - Exploitation Done Right (Kinda?)
Alright, so I finally got around to watching "Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS" after hearing about it for years. Look, I'm a sucker for exploitation flicks, especially when they're trying to push boundaries, 'cause that's where you sometimes find some crazy practical effects and stunts even if they're low budget. This one...well, it definitely pushes boundaries, alright. I mean, the premise alone is insane: Nazi scientist lady running experiments to prove women are tougher than men? Wild. It's obviously super problematic with its depiction of, well, everything. But, and this is a big but, Dyanne Thorne chews the scenery like nobody's business. She's completely unhinged as Ilsa, and you can't take your eyes off her. The torture scenes are brutal, but there's a certain... commitment to the horror that's almost impressive in a perverse way. I wouldn't exactly say it's enjoyable, but it's definitely memorable. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a hidden gem or anything. It's trash. Glorious trash. The acting is mostly terrible (Thorne excluded), the plot is paper-thin, and it's incredibly exploitative. But as far as exploitation films go, it's got a certain... energy? I'm not recommending it unless you're really into this type of thing and understand what you're getting into. It's definitely NOT for the faint of heart. There's this one scene with the dogs and...yeah, I'll just leave it at that. Overall, watch with extreme caution and a whole lot of context. It's a dark, disturbing, and weirdly fascinating piece of cinema history. Definitely not something you're gonna put on for family movie night, lol.
