The Pope's Exorcist: More World-Building Potential Than Meets the Eye?
Okay, so I just saw The Pope's Exorcist. Look, I'm a sci-fi guy, but I also love a good conspiracy thriller, and the idea of the Vatican covering up centuries of demonic shenanigans? That's right up my alley. Russell Crowe was... well, Russell Crowe. He chewed scenery, but in a way that mostly worked for the character. I actually appreciated Father Amorth's sort of sardonic approach to demon hunting. It felt different than the usual grimdark exorcist we get. What REALLY got my brain going was the whole 'fallen angel in the Spanish Inquisition' plot. That stuff IS cool. The way it tied into the specific location, that crumbling abbey, with its layered history... that's where I started thinking about the potential for world-building. Imagine a whole franchise based on this secret history, with different exorcists uncovering various conspiracies across the globe? They could have delved deeper into how the Vatican actually works in these situations, establishing protocols and showing a whole team in place. Maybe a little more of that and less of that CGI demon would've helped. Honestly, the movie itself was fine. Nothing groundbreaking, but entertaining enough. The possession stuff was pretty standard, jumpscares and all. But man, that little glimpse into a hidden history? If they leaned into that more, they could really create something special. They only scratched the surface of the world-building possibilities! I almost wish I could get my hands on the script and rework it. So, yeah, not a great movie, but definitely had some interesting ideas that could be expanded in cool ways. Anyone else feel that way, or am I just being a nerd again? Also, could the demon's name be any less inspired? 'Asmodeus'? Come on!
