Napoleon (2023) - Anyone Else Feel Like It Was... Missing Something?
Okay, so I just got back from seeing this 'Napoleon' thing... big epic, right? And visually, yeah, it was pretty impressive. Those battle scenes were definitely a spectacle, reminded me a little of 'Waterloo' (1970), though maybe not quite as gritty? My main problem is...I don't know...did anyone else feel like they were missing the heart of the story? Like, we get the battles and the Josephine drama (and Joaquin Phoenix did REALLY well with the brooding thing), but it felt somehow detached. Like I was watching a history lesson instead of a deeply personal story? I kept waiting for some kind of emotional connection and it just never really landed for me. Maybe it's because I came in expecting something more along the lines of 'Barry Lyndon' (1975), you know, the rise and fall of an ambitious anti-hero, but without that underlying dark humor and the kind of pathos Kubrick gave it. And speaking of Josephine...I liked Vanessa Kirby's performance, but was it just me, or was their relationship too simplified? I mean, was it all just about power and manipulation? I guess it was a different take. Anyway, what did everyone else think? Did it deliver on the epic promise, or was it just a really long, expensive history lesson? Curious to hear your thoughts.
