65: Dinosaurs, Adam Driver, and... Meh?
Okay, so I finally saw "65"! I was actually kinda hyped for this, I mean, Adam Driver fighting dinosaurs? Sign me up! The premise alone, a crash-landed space pilot and a young girl trying to survive prehistoric Earth before a giant asteroid hits, is pretty cool. I gotta say, the visuals were decent, especially the dinosaur designs. That one scene where they're running through the forest with that gigantic Carnotaurus chasing them? Seriously intense. Driver definitely gave a committed performance, you can see the weight of his past tragedy etched on his face. But... and this is a big BUT, the story felt kinda thin. It felt like they were just going from point A to point B with dinosaurs popping up randomly to keep things 'exciting'. The relationship between Mills (Driver's character) and Koa (Ariana Greenblatt) was sweet in some scenes, but ultimately predictable. And honestly, some of the dinosaur encounters felt a bit cliché? Run, scream, barely escape – we've seen it all before. Plus, I don't know, maybe I'm being picky, but the whole 'alien spaceship crash-landing on prehistoric Earth' concept, while intriguing, felt a little underdeveloped? I wanted more context, more world-building! I was hoping for some glimpses of Somaris, their home planet, or maybe even some explanation about why they were even travelling so far. They sorta touched on it but not enough for me. Overall, "65" wasn't a terrible movie. It's a decent popcorn flick, especially if you're a dinosaur enthusiast. But it definitely had the potential to be so much more. I'd give it a solid 6/10. Watch it if you have nothing else to do on a rainy afternoon, but don't expect to be amazed. Oh, and I'm sorry, but the director is unknown? Really? IMDb says Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, no?
