Air: More Than Just Shoes? My Theory About the Deloris Jordan Factor

Okay, so I just watched Air, and while I enjoyed the nostalgia trip of 80s basketball and the underdog story of Nike's gamble, I've got a theory bubbling about Deloris Jordan. We all know Michael Jordan became a global icon, but what if the movie heavily downplays just how pivotal his mom was in shaping that brand and his overall success? Like, Air shows her as a smart negotiator, getting a cut of every shoe sold – genius move for sure. But I think it hints at something deeper. My theory is that Deloris, in reality, had even more influence on the creative direction and marketing of Air Jordan than the film lets on. Think about it: she understood her son better than anyone. Ben Affleck's character Sonny vaccaro kind of stumbles into the partnership, motivated by pure gut feeling. Deloris on the other hand seemed to have a clear vision and understood that she had to advocate for her son and knew what he was worth. I mean, the scene where she just knows they have to offer that percentage deal... it felt less like a lucky guess and more like calculated brilliance based on truly understanding the market and her son's potential appeal to it. What if she was more of an uncredited creative consultant, subtly guiding the brand identity to resonate with a wider audience beyond just basketball fans? Maybe I'm reading too much into it (I do that sometimes, being a true international film buff!), but the movie felt like it only scratched the surface of her influence. What if, in reality, she was the one who truly understood the power of Michael’s image and the need to portray him as more than just an athlete—as a cultural icon? I would've loved to see that explored a bit more, you know? Anyone else feel the same? Thinking about it, it might've been intentional. Maybe they wanted to focus on the Nike angle, but imagine another film from her perspective, now THAT would be something! What do you all think? Am I reaching, or is there something to this Deloris Jordan mastermind theory?
