Insidious: The Red Door - Did it close the chapter well?
Okay, so I finally saw Insidious: The Red Door. As someone who lives and breathes editing, pacing is key for me, and honestly, that's where this one felt a little…off. The first half felt like it was dragging its feet, especially with Dalton in college. I get they were trying to establish the distance between him and Josh and his struggles, but some of those art class scenes felt unnecessarily long. Like, less tortured artist, more tortured audience member, haha. That being said, when it did kick into gear in the Further, it had some genuinely creepy moments. The scene with the frat party and the drawings coming to life? Actually pretty effective. Rose Byrne's return as Renai was welcome, even if her role felt a bit underutilized. Patrick Wilson did a decent job both acting and directing, but I think he could've trimmed the fat a lot more to keep things tighter. The whole 'memory suppression' angle was interesting to explore, but I wonder if they pushed it a bit too far. Like, how much can one family reasonably forget? Overall, it wasn't offensively bad, and it definitely had some strong visuals and a few good scares. I just think it could have benefitted from a sharper edit and a bit more focus. It felt more like a slow burn than a gripping horror film, and while I appreciate a good slow burn, the payoff wasn't quite there for me. Definetly not as good as the first two. Anyone else think the new demon designs felt a little derivative? Like a mix of Silent Hill and some other stuff? Curious to hear everyone's thoughts.
