Tetris (2023) - Not Exactly What I Expected, But Still Pretty Good!
Okay, so I finally watched "Tetris". I went in expecting a straight-up biopic and, well, it's...not. It's more like a Cold War thriller with Tetris sprinkles. Taron Egerton is, as always, super watchable as Henk Rogers. He has that everyman quality that just pulls you in. But I gotta say, the Russians were kind of cartoonishly villainous? Like, dialing it up to 11 villainous. I get it, Iron Curtain and all, but it felt a little much sometimes. It felt like a mix of drama, with a sprinkle of comedy and moments that just didn't work. There's this one scene, where Henk's having dinner with the Elorg reps, and Alexei Pajitnov (the creator of Tetris, played by Nikita Efremov - casting was spot on!), is clearly so uncomfortable and just wants his game recognized. You can see the conflict on his face. THAT stuff, the quiet moments of character, is where the movie really shines. I wish there had been more of that and less of the overly dramatic car chases (which, let's be real, felt a little out of place). Speaking of car chases, i'm not really sure why they were even added, since Tetris is a game of puzzles. Overall, I enjoyed it. It's a fun watch, and you'll definitely be humming the Tetris theme for days afterward. Plus, it's a fascinating look at the business side of gaming, which is something we don't often see. But if you're expecting a purely biographical drama, you might be a little disappointed. Go in expecting a slightly heightened, slightly silly, but ultimately entertaining story, and you'll have a good time. One final note, I do like that they showed real life photos at the end, just to show how the characters looked in real life. It's a great touch! What did you guys think?
