TMNT: Mutant Mayhem - Is Everyone Really Loving It?
Okay, I just saw Mutant Mayhem, and look, I'm seeing all the rave reviews. People are calling it the best TMNT movie ever. I... I just don't get it. Don't get me wrong, the animation style is definitely unique, kinda like a living comic book or something, that's fine. But the actual story? The writing? Felt super derivative and predictable. Like, we're really gonna act like this 'trying to fit in' schtick is fresh territory for these characters? They've been doing that since 1984, people! And the teens acting like actual teens... yeah, I guess that's what they were going for, but honestly, I found it kinda grating after a while. The constant babbling and pop culture references felt forced and occasionally just plain annoying. Like, did they really need to spend five minutes arguing about which celebrity they look like? I chuckled once or twice, sure, but it felt more like lazy writing than clever character development. And April O'Neil? I like this version, it's interesting, but something felt off about how she was handled. She's basically just the awkward teenage girl trope, and I wish they did something more with her character. Baxter Stockman was probably the highlight for me, which speaks volumes in itself, I think. Ice Cube as Superfly was… fine. But honestly, the villain design was lame, and felt generic. I genuinely think that they focused too much on visuals, and sacrificed the story and the heart of TMNT. Look, maybe I'm just showing my age here or being overly cynical... but compared to the original movies (yeah, I said it!), this felt... hollow. It's perfectly watchable, sure. But 'best TMNT movie ever'? Nah, I'm not buying it. I think people are just excited about the animation style and letting nostalgia cloud their better judgement. Fight me.
