"Believer" - Did the Sound Design Underwhelm Anyone Else?
Okay, so I just got back from "The Exorcist: Believer," and while it was... something... I'm kinda disappointed. I wasn't expecting Friedkin levels of genius, obviously, but I really felt like the sound design missed a trick. I mean, the original "Exorcist" is iconic for its unsettling sounds, right? Remember that Regan snarl? Goosebumps, every time. But in "Believer," a lot of the scary stuff just felt... generic? Like, the demon voices seemed like standard distortion effects you'd find in any horror film. There were a few moments in the woods where the ambient sound was creepy, but overall, it didn't build the same dread that the original did. I thought the effects were decent, but the sound made or break the movie. What did everyone else think of Angela and Katherine possessed makeup? Don't get me wrong, there were some genuinely creepy scenes, especially early on when Angela and Katherine first start acting weird. That whole missing time thing was effective. And the performances were generally solid. But I think the film relied way too much on jump scares and didn't invest enough in creating a truly unsettling atmosphere through sound. Maybe I'm being too picky as a sound enthusiast? Just curious if anyone else had the same reaction? Did you find the sound design effective, or did it feel a bit...lacking? Also, feel free to geek out about any specific sound elements that did work for you – I'm always interested to hear different perspectives! I thought Ann Dowd was great, and the scene when they try to figure out which girl to save gave me chills.
