Exorcist: Believer - Worth a Watch or Just Cashing In?
Alright, fellow GenXers, moviebuff_marc here. Just saw "The Exorcist: Believer" and I'm still processing. Look, the OG "Exorcist" scarred me for life, right? I mean, pea soup...spinning heads...the whole shebang. THAT was cinema. This new one... well, it's got some creepy moments, no doubt. The whole missing time thing with the girls, Angela and Katherine? Definitely unsettling. And the possession stuff? They lean HARD into that, with contortions and the usual demonic voices. But here's my question: Does it earn the "Exorcist" title? I'm not so sure. I kept waiting for something truly shocking or original. I remember being genuinely terrified by Regan's slow descent in the original. This felt... predictable? Like they were just hitting the bullet points of what an Exorcist movie should be. And THAT ending?! Seriously? Felt kinda rushed and convenient, didn't it? I kept thinking back to "Rosemary's Baby"--now THAT was subtle horror. This felt like they were shouting at me. Anyone else feel like they were trying TOO hard to recapture the magic of the original? I mean, bringing back Ellen Burstyn was a nice touch (poor Chris MacNeil!), but it felt more like fan service than anything integral to the plot. I dunno, maybe my expectations were too high. But I'm curious to hear what everyone else thought. Did it scare you? Did it live up to the hype? Or is it just another example of Hollywood trying to milk a classic dry? What did you all think of the whole 'power of community' angle? Seemed a bit…tidy to me. Like they were trying to inject some modern sensibilities where maybe they didn't belong. And the whole 'everyone prays in their own way' thing... Is that really the point of an Exorcist movie? I'm just spitballing here, folks. Hit me with your thoughts!
