Reptile - Benicio Del Toro slaps... but what WAS going on?

Okay, so I just finished watching Reptile with Sarah and Mike, and we're all a little...confused? Benicio Del Toro was amazing, obviously. He can brood like nobody's business, BUT the plot felt so convoluted at times. Like, I get the corruption angle with the cops and the real estate stuff, but were we supposed to fully understand every little thread? I'm still not 100% sure on the timeline of events leading up to Summer's murder. Specifically, the scene where the PI, Willy, is attacked in his office – did anyone else feel that was just kinda...dropped? We know he was snooping around and got too close to something, but the payoff felt kinda anticlimactic? And what about that whole subplot with the drug operation and the connections back to Summer's family? Was that supposed to be a red herring, or did it actually tie everything together? I felt like they kept introducing new, slightly unrelated plot points that they didn't fully develop. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the performances were top-notch (Alicia Silverstone also killed it!). I just feel like the script needed another pass to tighten things up, you know? Maybe I just missed something obvious, but did anyone else feel a little lost in the weeds with all the different characters and motivations? Basically, what was the one detail that you think was the key to unraveling everything? Because honestly, I'm leaning towards rewatching it with subtitles and a diagram, lol. Help!
