Alien: Romulus - Genuinely Scared or Just Jump Scares?
Okay, so I just saw Alien: Romulus and I gotta say, I'm still processing. The visuals were definitely creepy, like, seriously derelict space station vibes, you know? That one scene where they're crawling through the vent system and that facehugger drops? Dude, I almost needed a change of pants. Talk about 'Game over, man! Game over!' But was it actually scary, or just a bunch of loud noises and things popping out? I mean, the original Alien, that was pure dread. It wasn't just about the Xenomorph itself (though, let's be real, that thing is nightmare fuel), it was the atmosphere, the isolation, the knowing that something awful was lurking. Do we get that here, or is it just Xenomorph whack-a-mole? The young colonists were... fine. I'm not sure I really CARED about them like I did Ripley and the crew of the Nostromo. Specifically, the protagonist, Rain. Her motivations felt a bit... muddled? I get she wants to protect her "family" but I wasn't fully buying it. Did anyone else feel that way? Also, what did you think of the new Xenomorph variations? Like, the chestbursters felt different this time. More aggressive? I'm wondering if we're heading down a path of power scaling the Xenomorph which can make it less scary over time. So, my question to you all is: Does Alien: Romulus capture the true terror of the original, or is it just a fun, but ultimately forgettable, ride? I'm torn. "I need a goddamn answer!" (Yeah, I'm quoting myself quoting Hicks, deal.) I need to hear what others think before I make up my mind.
