Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Worth summoning again?
Okay, so we finally saw Beetlejuice Beetlejuice last night, and I wanted to give my fellow parents the lowdown. As a HUGE fan of the original (I mean, who isn't?!), I was cautiously optimistic. The trailers looked good, but sequels after, like, 30 years are always risky, right? First off, Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz? Casting GOLD. She totally nails that angsty teen vibe, but with a Lydia Deetz-esque twist. I did feel like some of the humor fell a little flat for my taste, but my older kiddo (14) was cracking up, especially during the scenes with Beetlejuice himself. Keaton is still SO good, even after all this time. He hasn't lost a step. I found Winona Ryder just a bit subdued; maybe Lydia's all grown up now? I also thought they could have gone a little deeper into the family dynamic. The whole 'three generations of Deetz women' thing was interesting, but it felt a little underdeveloped for my taste. There was also one quick joke I couldn't tell if it was a little too suggestive for this movie, but maybe I'm just sensitive. Visually, the movie is fantastic. Tim Burton's style is all over it, but with a modern update. The sets and creature designs are wonderfully weird. I was worried it would rely too much on CGI, but they did a great job blending practical effects with the digital stuff. Plus, the soundtrack is killer – brings back all the nostalgic feels! Overall, I'd say it's a fun movie with just a few minor flaws. Definitely worth seeing if you are fans of the original, but maybe give it a watch before bringing younger kids, just to be safe. I'd put it at a solid 7/10 for family viewing, mostly due to some slightly darker themes. What did you guys think?
