Anora: Pretty Woman...meets Russian Oligarch Drama?
Okay, so I just saw "Anora." No spoilers, promise! But wow, this film kinda messed with my head. On the surface, it feels like a modern, gritty "Pretty Woman" – you know, the hooker with the heart of gold and the rich dude? But then BOOM, it takes a hard left turn into something way darker and more…well, Russian. Think "Eastern Promises" but with way more awkward family dinners. What I really dug was how it played with expectations. You're rooting for Anora (fantastic performance, by the way) to escape her circumstances and find her happy ending. But then the oligarch dad shows up (figuratively speaking, of course, until he's, y'know, literally there) and it's like, 'oh, right, fairy tales? Those don't exist, Marc, get a grip'. There's this one scene, I won't say what happens, but it involves a very expensive car and a very frustrated Russian dude...and it just felt so real. Like, this is how power works, this is how the other half lives, or maybe doesn't live. It’s not a perfect film. There were a couple of plot points that felt a little rushed, maybe they lost the funding who knows. And honestly, I'm still not sure how I feel about the ending. But it's the kind of movie that sticks with you, that makes you think about class, about power, and about just how messed up the whole "romantic comedy" thing is anyway. Anyone else see shades of like, early Scorsese here...just me? Overall, I'd say it's worth checking out if you're looking for something different. Just don't go in expecting a happy-go-lucky rom-com. It's more like…a brutally honest, darkly funny, and ultimately kinda depressing rom-com. Is that a genre now? Whatever. Go see it, then tell me what you thought. I need to unpack this one with people.
