Okay, "Emilia Pérez" Just Broke My Brain (and My Heart a Little)

So, I just got out of "Emilia Pérez" and...wow. I went in expecting maybe a dark comedy, given the whole lawyer-for-a-cartel-boss setup, but it was like, so much more? It's hard to even categorize. Romance? Crime drama? Musical?! Yes to all, apparently. Rita, the lawyer, totally relatable in her cynicism, and then BAM, she's helping this dude, the cartel leader, transition. It's bizarre, but like, beautifully bizarre. I actually found myself tearing up at points, which I wasn't expecting from a movie involving… you know... criminals. Honestly, I'm still processing. There's this one scene where they're rehearsing for...well, I won't spoil it, but it's a musical number and it completely shifted my perspective on the character of the cartel leader. It was so vulnerable and human, it made me forget for a minute that he's, you know, A TERRIBLE PERSON. It's definitely a movie that plays with your expectations. The music was surprisingly good too, kind of like a poppy, modern version of a classic Hollywood musical. I wasn't completely sold on everything – the ending felt a little rushed, and I wish they'd explored Rita's development a bit more – but overall, I was completely engrossed. And yeah, maybe I developed a slight crush on the lead, sue me. It's not your typical rom-com (understatement of the century!), but if you're looking for something that's completely different and willing to go on a weird, emotional ride, I'd say definitely check it out. Let me know what you guys think! Am I crazy for kinda shipping Rita and... you know who? Be honest! Also, does anyone know who directed this thing? I can't seem to find it anywhere and I wanna give them props (or maybe yell at them for the emotional damage, jury's still out).
