Speak No Evil (2024): Did the Remake Live Up to the Dread?
Okay, so I finally saw Speak No Evil (2024), the American remake of the Danish flick. Anyone else catch it yet? I went in with some serious trepidation because the original is just...UGH. It's disturbing in a way that sticks with you. I was worried Hollywood would sanitize it or ramp up the jump scares, totally missing the point. I gotta say, I think they managed to capture the core unsettling feeling. James McAvoy is phenomenal as the creepy host, Paddy. He's so subtly off, it makes your skin crawl. And Mackenzie Davis as Louise, the mom? I just wanted to scream at her to trust her gut instinct the whole time. There were some moments where I felt like the tension dragged a tiny bit – like they were drawing out the awkward dinner party scenes a little too long. But overall, the slow burn really worked to build the sense of dread. There were a couple of changes I wasn't totally sold on, though. The ending felt a little different, maybe? I can't quite put my finger on it. And I kind of missed the starkness of the original's landscapes, this felt a little too…picturesque? Maybe that was the point? IDK. It's just something that's been bugging me. All in all, I'd say it's a solid thriller, especially if you haven't seen the original. But if you have, prepare to be comparing the whole time! I still think the Danish version wins out for sheer, unadulterated horror, but this one's definitely worth a watch if you're in the mood to be properly creeped out. What did everyone else think?
