Rebel Ridge: Gritty, But What's With The Clothes?

Okay, so I just finished watching Rebel Ridge and whew, it was INTENSE. Definitely a thriller. The whole thing with the ex-Marine battling corrupt cops was gripping, and that opening scene with the bag snag was done really well. I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of it. But as always, I couldn't help but notice the costumes (or, you know, lack thereof, haha). It's a hyper-realistic film so everyone wears normal clothes, I get it. But sometimes I feel like those kinds of choices can be just as telling as, say, a ballgown. Like, the Marine, (whose name I think was Stowe?) was pretty much in various states of dishevelment for the whole movie. Totally understandable given the circumstances, but did anyone else think his jeans looked too perfectly worn-in? And those small-town deputy uniforms... were they trying to go for a Wes Anderson colour palette or something? They looked almost too adorable to be corrupt, but then again, maybe that was the point? I’d love to hear other opinions on that. Also, this might be a weird thing to focus on, but the leader of the baddies (the sheriff I think) always seemed to have the cleanest, most immaculate boots? Even after what should've been a grueling chase through the woods? Did he have a boot cleaning service on standby or what? Just seemed a little sus, haha. Maybe it was just a detail to show how dedicated to his image was, but it made me scratch my head more than once. Overall, a decent watch. Definitely not a light-hearted movie night pick, but it kept me entertained. Just wish the costume direction could be a bit more thought out (even if it's everyday clothes!) Would I see it again? Probably not. But i'm interested to see your thoughts on the film!
