"Lift" - Was it REALLY just a heist movie? My theory...
Okay, just saw "Lift" and I gotta say, it was… fine. Fun, popcorn flick, exactly what I expected for a Friday night. But I was thinking about it, and something felt off. It's presented as all about the money, right? Cyrus and his crew need to lift the gold to stop the terrorist attack. But what if the REAL heist wasn't the gold itself, but the exposure? Stick with me here. Think about it: Interpol is involved, right? Abby Gladwell is clearly a top-tier agent. But she’s conveniently always a step behind. Cyrus basically tells her his plan half the time. What if she's letting him do it on purpose? Maybe Interpol needed Cyrus and his crew to publicly expose the corrupt businessman hiding behind the terrorist plot. The gold being stolen just becomes the cover, the messy excuse for why Interpol can swoop in and arrest everyone involved in the larger scheme. It absolves Interpol of planting evidence or doing underhanded methods, as it all stems from the actions of the heist! That end scene where Cyrus gets a deal to work WITH Interpol? It feels too neat, right? My theory is that's been the plan all along. Abby wasn't trying to catch him; she was auditioning him. Cyrus and his crew may be the best thieves, but they're also ridiculously good at improv and thinking on their feet. (The art forgery scene PROVES that!) They're perfect for off-the-books ops. The "gold" was just the bait. Maybe I'm reading too much into it (I've def. been on the youtube conspiracy videos lately, lol), but the pacing of the investigation always felt off. It was like the movie wanted us to think Interpol was competent, but they kept stumbling. Maybe I'll rewatch it and look specifically for clues. What do you guys think? Am I crazy? Or is there something to this?
