Garfield's Back...But is it Top Cat or Heathcliff?
Alright, fellow GenXers, moviebuff_marc here, fresh outta seeing "The Garfield Movie" and gotta say, it's...well, it's a Garfield movie. Look, Bill Murray is Garfield in my head, so Chris Pratt had big shoes to fill. He does okay, I guess, but it felt...different. Less cynical, more...kid-friendly? Which, duh, it is a kids movie. But remember the old Garfield cartoons? That sardonic wit was key! Anyway, the plot with the dad, Vic, felt kinda shoehorned in. Like they wanted a "Finding Nemo" vibe or something. Did it work? Eh, kinda. The animation was decent, though. No complaints there. But anyone else get a serious "Top Cat" feeling when Garfield and Vic were running around with the alley cats? I mean, it wasn't bad, but I kept waiting for Benny the Ball to show up! Remember Top Cat, right? And speaking of comparisons, I'm trying to put my finger on it. It wasn't quite "Heathcliff" levels of awfulness (sorry, Heathcliff fans, if there are any!), but it wasn't "A Goofy Movie" good either. It's somewhere in the middle. It gave me a few chuckles, especially with Odie being his usual adorable, clueless self. But did it capture the magic of the original comics or the Bill Murray movies? Not entirely, in my humble opinion. So, what did you all think? Anyone else feeling the Top Cat vibes? And did anyone else think the lasagna looked kinda…unappetizing? Just me? Heh. Maybe I'm just getting too old for this lasagna-loving cat business.
