MAXXXINE: Mia Goth's Trilogy Capper - Did It Stick the Landing?
Okay, so I just got out of "MaXXXine" and I'm still processing. Gonna try to avoid major spoilers, but fair warning, some general plot points might slip. Mia Goth, obviously, is phenomenal. She really commits to Maxine Minx, and you can see this is a character she's lived with for a while now. The 80s Hollywood setting is chef's kiss. Neon, sleaze, dreams, and a lurking killer – it all just WORKS. Loved the visual style, very evocative. What I'm still mulling over is the overall pacing. There were moments that felt a little drawn out, almost like they were trying to build suspense but it just teetered on the edge of being slow. I also think some of the supporting characters felt a bit underdeveloped, which is a shame because you had some great actors like Elizabeth Debicki and Lily Collins. They had their moments, but I wish they were more integral to Maxine's journey. The ending... whew. It definitely leaves you with questions, and the ambiguousness, I think, is intentional. Is Maxine truly free or is she forever haunted by her past? I haven't decided if I like the ambiguity or if I wanted something more definitive. But overall, Goth once again proves she's a scream queen for a new generation and a force to be reckoned in the thriller/horror space. Definitely worth seeing if you've enjoyed the other films. Anyone else seen it yet? What are your thoughts? I'm especially curious about your interpretation of the very last scene! Maybe I missed something subtle...
