Okay, Monkey Man - Did anyone else feel...conflicted?
So, I finally got a chance to see Monkey Man and wow, it was... a lot. I went in expecting a cool action flick, you know, something along the lines of a darker John Wick. And, visually? It delivered. The fight choreography was insane, and the overall aesthetic was super gritty and compelling. The story, about this guy who's basically living in the bottom of society and fighting to survive, was pretty gripping too. But here's where I'm conflicted. As a parent, I'm always thinking about what messages movies are sending, even in action movies. The level of violence in Monkey Man was intense, like REALLY intense. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for younger teens, and even older teens, you'd want to have a serious conversation afterward. I'm not against violence in movies per se, but it felt like there was a lot of rage and brutality, and I'm not sure how I feel about it all. It's not really a fun action romp like some others that are similar. And then there's the whole social commentary aspect. The film tackles themes of wealth inequality and corruption in a really blunt way. Which is good, I guess? But sometimes it felt a little preachy, like it was hitting me over the head with the message. But maybe I'm just being sensitive. I am worried about my children and that kind of thing. Ultimately, I'm still processing it. Did anyone else find themselves feeling a bit uneasy after watching it? Especially the scene in the temple, that was a tough one. Or am I just being overly cautious as a mom? Would love to hear other's thoughts!
