"Apocalypse Z: Beginning of the End" - More like "Beginning of Another Zombie Movie?" (Some Thoughts)

Okay, so I just finished "Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End" (catchy title, I'll give 'em that). Look, I’m a Gen X'er, right? I've seen EVERYTHING. Romero practically raised me. So, walking into ANY zombie flick these days is like, 'Okay, show me something new.' And, honestly? I'm not sure 'Apocalypse Z' really brought much to the table that I haven't seen before. Maybe I'm getting old, but it felt...familiar. My theory? They were going for a "I Am Legend" vibe mixed with "28 Days Later", but on a REALLY tight budget. Manel, holed up with his cat...that part worked. Seriously, the cat was probably the best actor in the whole movie (no offense to the guy playing Manel). But when he had to go out? It just felt...standard. The infected were fast, sure, but not innovative. And the 'wits' Manel used? Mostly just hiding behind things and getting lucky. No real problem solving. I was expecting some MacGyver level stuff, and man, was I disappointed. Here's where I go full tinfoil hat (and trigger warning for cat lovers): my theory is the cat is the key. Think about it. The movie focuses on Manel's bond with the feline. What if the cat is somehow immune, and its blood (or something) holds the key to a cure? Or, darker thought, what if the cat is the source of the infection?! Hear me out! We never see where it was before the outbreak…just sayin'. Overall? Eh. It was alright. If you’re REALLY bored and have seen all the actual classics 100 times like me maybe give it a look-see. But temper your expectations. It’s no "Night of the Living Dead," that’s for damn sure. And somebody get that cat an Oscar nom… seriously.
