Spaceman: Is Hanuš Actually... Human?
Okay, so I just finished watching Spaceman, and I'm still wrestling with Hanuš. Adam Sandler gives such a beautifully restrained performance as Jakub, and the loneliness is palpable. But Hanuš, that giant spider-alien therapist... something's tickling my brain. Is he really an alien? Or is he a manifestation of Jakub's subconscious? Hear me out. The way Hanuš appears only when Jakub is at his lowest, reflecting back his feelings and prompting him to confront his issues with Lenka (Carey Mulligan, heartbreaking as always) feels almost TOO convenient. Like, a cosmic therapist showing up exactly when you need him? The scene where he's dissolving Jakub's memories, feeding on them... that felt less like alien behavior and more like a symbolic representation of Jakub processing his regrets and failures. Maybe Hanuš is an alien, but maybe he's also a projection, a coping mechanism taken form. I also think it's interesting how only Jakub can see and interact with him. Even the ship's AI, technically more advanced, doesn't acknowledge Hanuš’s presence. It could be that the AI is just programmed to ignore anomalies, but it solidifies my theory that he is only visible and audible to Jakub. It's definitely more enjoyable and interesting to interpret the movie in a way that makes me think the friendly spider is a figment of imagination. What if this is the reason the film did not do well? Were audiences expecting more explosions and less introspection? I am honestly unsure. Thoughts?
