"Woman of the Hour": That whole Dating Game thing ACTUALLY happened?? And with Anna Kendrick directing?!

Okay, so I just saw "Woman of the Hour" and I'm still kinda processing? The premise alone is wild – a woman goes on the Dating Game and unknowingly picks a serial killer?! I had NO idea that was based on a real story. Kudos to Anna Kendrick for choosing THAT as her directorial debut; talk about a bold move. Visually, I thought it was alright. The costumes and sets definitely sold the 70s LA vibe. But as an editor myself, I'm all about that pacing. I felt some parts dragged a little, especially in the beginning when they were establishing Cheryl's (Kendrick's character) backstory. Like, we get she's an aspiring actress, but did we need that many audition scenes? I think they could've tightened that up and given us more time with Rodney Alcala (the killer) building the tension before the actual show. What REALLY got me was the ending. I won't spoil it, but the way they intercut Cheryl's post-show anxiety with Rodney's… let's just say, extracurricular activities… was super effective and unsettling. Also the real audiotapes at the end?! Chilling. I do wonder if they maybe softened Rodney just a tad too much? He definitely came off as charming, but maybe too charming? I would love to hear others' thoughts on that and the rest of the execution. Overall, I enjoyed it! A solid directorial debut and a crazy story brought to life. What were your guys' favorite/least favorite parts? And how familiar were you with the true crime aspect going in?
