Miller's Girl: Twisted or Just...Twisty?

Okay, so I just saw Miller's Girl. And…whew. I'm conflicted. Like, I walked out feeling like I needed a shower, but also…did I actually like it? Jenna Ortega is insanely good, which isn't a shock. Seriously, the scene where she's reading her story aloud in class? Chills. You could practically see the cogs turning in her brain. 'You strike me as a woman with secrets, Ms. Miller' vibes for sure, know what I mean? The tension was palpable. But also, I was lowkey yelling at the screen, 'girl, run!' Martin Freeman, though... I don't know, I felt a little icky watching him sometimes? He’s playing this tortured, intellectual teacher thing, and there are moments where you almost feel bad for him. Almost. Then he says something like, 'I want to see what you're capable of,' and the whole thing just felt...predatory? I think that was the point, but it still made me really uncomfortable. The whole student-teacher dynamic felt like a minefield, and honestly, I'm not sure the movie navigated it perfectly. Definitely a movie that makes you think after it ends, or at least argue online with strangers about it, LOL. I keep going back to the script itself. It had moments of real brilliance, those lines that just stick with you, but other times it felt a bit...contrived? Like, it was trying so hard to be controversial that it ended up tripping over itself. There's a fine line between exploring boundaries and just being exploitative, and I'm not entirely sure Miller's Girl stayed on the right side of it the whole time. Still, the ending? Definitely didn't see that coming. All in all, a very well-acted but potentially problematic experience. I will be sitting back to read all the twitter debates for sure. Anyways, that's just my two cents. What'd y'all think? Did anyone else feel like they needed a moral scrub after watching? And did anyone understand that ending? Because I'm still piecing it together. Maybe I need a rewatch...or maybe I just need to watch Dead Poets Society to cleanse my palate. 'O Captain! My Captain!'
