Okay, "Bug" (1975) is WAY weirder than you remember...

Just finished another rewatch of "Bug" (1975). I swear, every time I see it, I pick up on something new. This time, I'm CONVINCED there's a deeper, slightly unsettling psychological layer going on, especially with Parmiter. Like, yeah, giant fire-starting cockroaches are scary, but Parmiter's obsession with them? That's where the real horror lies, imo. Remember that scene where he's practically giddy when he gets one of the bugs to 'sing' with the tuning fork? Total 'mad scientist' vibes, but it goes beyond that, doesn't it? My theory is that the bugs are really a reflection of Parmiter's suppressed desires, maybe even anger? The whole rural American setting, the repressed atmosphere... It's like the bugs are an external manifestation of the chaos brewing inside him. He's searching for meaning in their bizarre abilities, a way to escape his own mundane existence. It's almost like he wants the chaos, even if he doesn't consciously realize it. Think about how quickly he goes from studying them to kind of... befriending them? It's creepy! And the ending... shudders I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it, but it's definitely open to interpretation. Did he create the "perfect" monster and therefore a part of his inner self? Or was he consumed by something he never understood to begin with? I know it's just a low-budget movie about killer bugs, but the more I watch it, the more I think it’s actually kinda brilliant in a messed-up way. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I'm feeling like I'm going down a rabbit hole here, and I'm curious if anyone else has picked up similar vibes. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but the movie definitely leaves a lingering feeling, you know? #bug #1970shorror #horror #movietheory #hannahfilmbuff
