Okay, so everyone loves Asterix and the Twelve Tasks, right? Am I the only one...?

Alright, alright, before you all grab your pitchforks, hear me out. I just re-watched "The Twelve Tasks of Asterix" (1976). Growing up, yeah, it was a laugh riot. Obelix wanting more boar, the House That Drives You Mad, the island of pleasure... classic. But revisiting it as an actual adult? I'm not so sure it holds up as brilliantly as everyone seems to think. Look, the animation is definitely of its time, and okay, I'm willing to look past that. But the humor? It feels... forced, sometimes? Like they're trying too hard to be zany. The bit with the administrative building? Totally a product of cynical French bureaucracy but did that translate to broader audiences? I dunno, maybe. And honestly, Obelix, while hilarious, gets a little tiresome after the tenth "I want boar!" yell. At least Asterix is generally the same, just mildly bemused but still, both seem much more generic than in the original comic books, if you ask me. Yes, the island with those sexy women is pretty hilarious but also like... can we not? It's 2024. My niece likes this movie, and I don't want her thinking it's cool to just stare at the ladies like that. Kinda creepy. I'm not saying it's bad. There are genuinely funny moments. The hypnotized guy who does everything backwards is gold. And the ending is cute. Maybe I'm just being a grumpus. But I definitely wouldn't put it on the "top animated films of all time" list like I see so many people doing. Overrated, people, overrated! Prove me wrong, I dare ya. Maybe I just need more boar. Or less. I don't know anymore.
