"Le Grand Restaurant" Meets Fast Food: Anyone Else Remember "The Wing or the Thigh?"
Okay, so I was channel surfing the other night (as you do when you're my age and can't sleep), and I stumbled across "The Wing or the Thigh?" (L'Aile ou la Cuisse) from '76. Anybody else remember this flick? It’s got Louis de Funès in peak form, being all comically stressed out as Charles Duchemin, this super-famous food critic. He's basically on a mission to save French cuisine from being completely overtaken by this evil fast food mogul, Tricatel. Think Inspector Clouseau meets...Julia Child? It's bizarre, but pretty funny. There's this one scene where Duchemin loses his sense of taste, and he has to rely on his son, Gérard, who's secretly a circus clown, to identify all the dishes. The slapstick is off the charts! It reminds me a bit of the old Jerry Lewis movies, but with a distinctly French flair. The whole thing is just so over-the-top and absurd. I also remember that the director isn't well-known; Coluche, who played Gerard, basically co-directed since Louis de Funès was sick and couldn't do much. It's definitely not high art, but it's got that classic French comedy sensibility that I grew up with – think "Le Grand Restaurant", but with more food fights. It's totally predictable, but sometimes you just need a silly movie with a happy ending, amirite? Plus, the visuals of all the processed food are strangely compelling... in a horrifying way! Definitely makes you think twice about hitting up that burger chain. Anyone else seen this one? What did you think? Did it make you swear off processed food... or just make you hungry for some fries?
